What Is a UK Spouse Visa?

A UK Spouse Visa is permission under the family visa partner route. It allows an eligible husband, wife or civil partner to live with their partner in the UK. Unmarried partners can also qualify under separate relationship requirements within this route.

Your sponsor may be a British or Irish citizen, someone with Indefinite Leave to Remain or another qualifying status. Refugee status is protection status, rather than settled status, although it can also support an eligible partner application.

Permission is usually granted for up to two years and nine months when applying from abroad, or two years and six months when switching or extending inside the UK. Different limits can apply where a sponsor has certain time-limited protection permission.

Who Can Apply for a Spouse Visa in 2026?

For a standard spouse visa application, both partners must be at least 18. You must have a marriage or civil partnership recognised in the UK, have met in person and intend to live together permanently. Your relationship must be genuine and subsisting, and previous relationships must have ended permanently.

You must also meet the applicable financial requirements, demonstrate adequate accommodation and satisfy the English language requirement unless exempt. Immigration history and suitability requirements matter too.

Marriage alone does not establish eligibility. Before collecting documents, check your partner’s qualifying status and whether you can apply from your current location. Sponsors receiving specified disability or carer’s benefits may instead need to demonstrate adequate maintenance.

Qualifying employment income, self-employment, pensions, certain non-employment income and cash savings can be relevant. Different sources have different conditions, and not every combination is permitted. For an overseas application, do not assume the applicant’s overseas salary can simply be added to the sponsor’s earnings.

Identify the correct financial category before calculating income. Someone established in salaried employment may need six months of payslips, matching bank statements and an employer’s letter. Recent job changes or variable earnings can require a different assessment and longer evidence period.

Self-employment and income from specified limited companies have separate requirements, often involving completed financial years, tax records, accounts and business bank statements. Six months of personal bank statements will not necessarily establish compliance.

Step 1: Check You Meet the Requirements

Start by recording your current visa, expiry date, application location, relationship history and financial circumstances. Decide which requirements apply and what evidence will demonstrate each one.

Applying from outside the UK normally involves entry clearance. Applying inside the UK requires eligibility to switch or extend. Visitors and people with permission for six months or less normally need to leave and apply abroad, although exceptions include eligible fiancé visa holders switching after marriage.
