Waiting for a Decision
Applying for a UK spouse visa is one of the most emotional parts of any immigration journey. You’ve gathered endless documents, paid the fees, attended your biometrics — and now, you wait.
For many couples, the waiting period can feel longer than the application itself. Understanding how long it really takes in 2025, and why some cases move faster than others, helps ease that anxiety and set realistic expectations.
At AHJ Immigration, we guide families through this waiting stage every day. The key to staying calm is knowing what’s normal, what’s delayed, and what you can do if it takes too long.
Official UKVI Processing Times for 2025
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) updates its processing times regularly, but averages can fluctuate based on global demand, security checks, and case complexity.
As of early 2025, the standard processing times for spouse visa applications are as follows:
| Application Type | Processing Time (Average) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse Visa from outside the UK (Entry Clearance) | 12–14 weeks | From date of biometrics appointment |
| Spouse Visa inside the UK (Switching / Extension) | 8–10 weeks | From date of submission |
| Priority Service (where available) | 15 working days | Additional Home Office fee applies |
| Super Priority Service | 1–3 working days | Limited availability; not offered in all countries |
These are the official averages, but the real experience can differ depending on where you apply and the quality of your submission.
“In 2025, UKVI has reduced the post-COVID backlog, but processing times still vary widely between regions. Some overseas applicants wait 3 months; others hear back in weeks. The key is document accuracy and timing.”
— Baz Jabbar, Senior Immigration Adviser at AHJ Immigration
Priority and Super Priority Explained
UKVI offers faster processing routes for those who need urgent decisions — but they come at a cost.
Priority Service (15 Working Days)
This option speeds up most family applications to around three weeks. It’s ideal if you have upcoming travel, work commitments, or family emergencies.
Super Priority Service (1–3 Working Days)
Available in select visa centres such as London, Dubai, and New Delhi, this fast-track service aims to deliver decisions within 24 hours (or 3 working days for complex cases).
However, even with these services, UKVI warns that complex cases can still take longer.
Mrs Ahmad’s Priority Visa
Mrs Ahmad applied for a UK spouse visa from Pakistan in early 2025 using the Priority Service. Despite the 15-working-day promise, her case took 26 days due to document verification.
Once AHJ contacted UKVI’s escalation channel, the decision was finalised within 48 hours.
This example highlights an important point: Priority services are faster — but not guaranteed.
Why Some Cases Take Longer
Delays don’t always mean something is wrong. They can happen for several reasons:
1. Missing or Unclear Documentation
If your supporting documents don’t clearly meet Appendix FM requirements (especially income or accommodation evidence), the caseworker may place your file under review.
2. Country of Application
Applications from high-volume countries like Pakistan, India, or Nigeria often face longer queues.
3. Background Checks
If either partner has lived in multiple countries or changed jobs frequently, additional security checks may be required.
4. Peak Periods
The months before Ramadan, Eid, or Christmas usually see higher application volumes.
5. Technical or System Delays
Occasionally, the VFS or TLS centre may take longer to upload biometrics data, delaying the case start date.
In 2025, Home Office figures show that around 9% of spouse visa applications exceeded standard processing targets — usually due to document verification or complex histories.
What to Do if Your Spouse Visa Is Delayed
If you’ve waited longer than the published times, there are practical steps you can take.
1. Check the Published Timelines
Start by comparing your waiting time against the latest UKVI service standards.
2. Contact UKVI or the Visa Centre
Use your GWF reference number to request an update. If your case has been pending more than 12 weeks (outside UK) or 10 weeks (inside UK), you can submit a “status enquiry”.
3. Request Assistance Through Your MP (UK-based applicants)
If you’re in the UK and the delay is excessive, your Member of Parliament can contact the Home Office on your behalf.
4. Seek Legal Advice for Administrative Delay
In cases where the delay is unreasonable — for example, beyond 6 months without valid cause — you may be eligible to challenge it under Judicial Review for delay.
At AHJ Immigration, we’ve helped clients successfully escalate long-pending spouse visa cases through pre-action letters.

Understanding “Decision Made” Updates
Seeing “Decision Made” in your tracking email doesn’t always mean approval — it simply means a result has been issued.
If you applied outside the UK, your decision letter will be inside the returned passport package.
For in-country applicants, you’ll receive a decision email before your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is produced.
What Happens After a Decision
Once approved, you’ll receive a 90-day entry visa if applying from abroad, which allows you to travel to the UK and collect your BRP within 10 days of arrival.
For extension or switch cases within the UK, your BRP will arrive by courier, usually within a week of the decision notice.
If refused, you may be eligible for Administrative Review or Judicial Review, depending on the grounds.
AHJ Immigration can help you assess the next step and challenge the decision promptly.
