Before you can settle permanently in the UK or become a British citizen, you must usually prove that you:
- Understand life in the UK, and
- Have a sufficient level of English.
These are the Knowledge of Life and Language (KoLL) requirements.
They show that you are integrating into British society and can fully participate in community life.
At AHJ Immigration, we help applicants prepare for both the Life in the UK Test and English language requirements, ensuring they meet Home Office standards the first time.
Who Needs to Meet the KoLL Requirements
You must meet both the Life in the UK Test and English language criteria if you are applying for:
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR); or
- British citizenship (naturalisation).
Exemptions apply for children under 18 and adults aged 65 or over.
The Life in the UK Test Explained
The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based multiple-choice exam about British history, culture, and values.
It confirms that you understand daily life, government, and traditions.
- Location: Over 30 official test centres across the UK.
- Format: 24 questions, 45 minutes.
- Pass mark: 18 correct answers (75 %).
- Fee: Β£50 (2025 rate).
You must book at least three days in advance through the official GOV.UK website and bring valid ID on test day.
Topics Covered
The test questions come from the official βLife in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residentsβ handbook, covering:
- The UKβs history and key events.
- Government, law, and values.
- Everyday life and customs.
- Responsibilities of residents and citizens.
Practising mock tests and reading the handbook carefully is essential for success.
Who Is Exempt from the Life in the UK Test
You do not need to take the test if you:
- Are under 18 or aged 65 and above;
- Have already passed it for a previous ILR application; or
- Provide medical evidence showing a long-term physical or mental condition preventing participation.
A GP or consultant must complete the official exemption form if applying on medical grounds.
English Language Requirement β Overview
Applicants must show a minimum level of English proficiency in speaking and listening.
This ensures you can integrate into the workplace and community.
Accepted evidence includes:
- An approved English test at the required level;
- A UK-recognised degree taught in English; or
- Nationality from an English-speaking country (e.g. USA, Canada, Jamaica).
Approved Test Providers (2025)
Only Home Office-approved Secure English Language Tests (SELT) are accepted.
Main providers in 2025:
- IELTS for UKVI (Life Skills or Academic)
- LanguageCert
- Pearson PTE Home
- Trinity College London
Tests must be taken at approved centres using your passport or BRP.
Required English Level
| Application Type | Required Level | CEFR Standard |
|---|---|---|
| ILR (most routes) | B1 in speaking & listening | Intermediate |
| British Citizenship | B1 in speaking & listening | Intermediate |
| Health & Care / Skilled Worker (entry) | A1βB1 depending on route | BasicβIntermediate |
Passing B1 English once normally satisfies both ILR and citizenship requirements.
