Help With New Applications and Spouse Visa Extensions

You may be applying for the first time, bringing your partner to the UK or preparing to extend an existing family visa. You may already understand the process but want an adviser to prepare and submit the application.

We start by checking the route and the facts that matter to your case. That includes where you both live, your partner’s immigration status, your relationship, the income or savings you plan to rely on and any important deadline.

You do not need a complete application pack before getting in touch. Tell us where things stand, and we will explain the appropriate next step.

What Our Spouse Visa Application Assistance Includes

When you instruct us for application preparation and submission, we agree the work with you before it begins. The Knightsbridge Immigration team manages the process from initial contact to case preparation and submission.

1. Eligibility and route assessment

Your adviser reviews your circumstances against the relevant requirements. We identify the points that need checking before the application is prepared, including any issue requiring advice outside our authorised scope.

2. A tailored evidence checklist

You receive guidance on the documents needed for your circumstances and what they must show. We review the material provided and explain missing information, inconsistencies or evidence gaps that need attention.

3. Application preparation and review

We prepare the agreed application work, organise supporting evidence and raise questions with you. You have the opportunity to check the application details before approving submission.

4. Submission and next steps

We manage the agreed submission process and explain the remaining steps, including identity checks or biometrics where required. Any additional work is addressed through the agreed terms of engagement.

You remain responsible for providing accurate information and obtaining the documents requested. Your adviser explains how outstanding items affect preparation and timing.

What Does Spouse Visa Assistance Cost?

Our professional fee for spouse or partner visa application assistance starts from £1,200. We confirm the work covered and the total fee in writing before you decide to instruct us. Your quotation reflects the application and work required, including any additional family applications.

Home Office application fees, the Immigration Health Surcharge and third-party costs, such as an English test or translations, are separate. Additional applications or work outside the agreed scope are discussed separately.

If you need advice on a particular issue or a review rather than full application preparation, tell us. We can explain the appropriate service and its fee. You do not have to commit to full application assistance simply to find out which service fits.

Is the UK Spouse or Partner Visa the Right Route?

This UK family visa route can allow an eligible partner to join or remain with someone who is British or Irish, settled in the UK, or holds another qualifying immigration status.

Both partners must be at least 18. The relationship must be genuine and continuing, and you must intend to live together permanently in the UK.

You may qualify through a marriage or civil partnership recognised in the UK, or as unmarried partners in a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years. Two years of living together is not an absolute requirement for every unmarried couple.

If your partner holds a work or Student visa, a dependant application may be the appropriate route instead. If you plan to marry in the UK, compare the spouse visa and fiancé visa routes before choosing an application.

What Your Application Needs to Show

Your relationship: The evidence should explain your relationship and continuing commitment. A marriage certificate alone does not answer every question. Relevant records depend on whether you live together, live apart or have previously been married.

Your finances: We check which financial requirement applies, which income or savings can be counted and what specified evidence is needed.

English language requirement: We explain the evidence required for your application stage. This may involve an approved test, a qualifying degree, an eligible nationality or an applicable exemption.

Accommodation: You need to demonstrate adequate accommodation for the household. Living with family does not automatically prevent an application, but the arrangements and supporting evidence need checking.

Immigration position and suitability: Your current permission, application location, previous decisions and relevant history can affect the route and the help required.

Understanding the Spouse Visa Financial Requirement

For most new applications on the five-year partner route, the minimum income requirement is £29,000 a year. Different rules can apply to eligible applicants covered by the pre-11 April 2024 transitional arrangements or where the sponsor receives specified disability or carer’s benefits.

It is not always possible to add both partners’ salaries together. For an overseas application, the applicant’s employment income generally cannot be counted under the standard rules. Different considerations apply to qualifying earnings from lawful work in the UK.

Eligible savings, pensions and other permitted income may also be relevant. Self-employment and variable earnings require particular care over the evidence and assessment period.

We help identify the correct calculation and documents for your situation. Our spouse visa financial requirements guide explains the main considerations.

Already in the UK or Preparing to Extend?

An in-country switch depends on your current immigration permission and the relevant requirements. Visitors generally need to apply from outside the UK rather than switch into the partner route.

If you already hold a spouse or partner visa, an extension needs fresh checks. Income, accommodation, relationship evidence and English requirements may need updating. An earlier grant does not automatically establish eligibility for the next application.

Tell us your permission expiry date when enquiring. Our spouse visa extension guide explains the preparation involved.

What Happens When You Get in Touch?

Start a Query with a brief account of your circumstances, or request a call back if you would rather speak to the team.

Include where you and your partner live, whether you are married or unmarried partners, your current immigration position and any deadline. Mention previous refusals or an application already in progress.

We use that information to establish whether we can help and explain the appropriate service, scope and fee. Detailed advice, document review and application work are agreed before they begin.

UK Spouse Visa Questions

How long does a UK Spouse Visa last?

An initial overseas partner visa is normally granted for up to two years and nine months. An in-country switch or extension is normally for up to two years and six months. Different periods can apply in particular circumstances.

How long does a decision take?

Published standard times are usually 12 weeks for overseas partner applications and eight weeks for in-country applications meeting the financial and English requirements. Additional checks can take longer. We explain preparation time separately from Home Office processing and cannot guarantee a decision date.

Can I work or study?

Spouse or partner permission normally allows work and study, subject to its conditions. Fiancé or proposed civil partner permission has different restrictions, so check which permission you hold.

What if my application has been refused or my circumstances are complicated?

Tell us when enquiring and provide the decision or relevant correspondence when requested. We check whether the work falls within our authorised scope. Matters requiring work beyond that scope, including appeals, judicial review and complex human rights representations, are referred to our solicitor partners. The solicitor firm provides the referred advice or representation under its own agreed engagement and fees.

Can this route lead to settlement?

Applicants on the five-year partner route may qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after the required qualifying period if all the settlement requirements are met. British citizenship is a separate application. Our spouse visa settlement guide explains the next stage.
